Installing ProShow and Moving Shows to a New Computer

$

You’ve just upgraded to a brand new computer and now you’re ready to install ProShow and move all your shows to your new computer.  In this article we will cover what you need to know in order to make this transition as smooth as possible.

Upgrading to a new system has many benefits, more processing power for your photo and video editing applications, more memory to handle multiple tasks at a time (i.e. running more than one program) and of course more storage space to save all of your content and slide show projects for ProShow.

Setting up a new computer can be a tedious process. Installing software, transferring data and learning to navigate a new operating system all at the same time can present its fair share of challenges.

Our goal is to get ProShow up and running on your new computer with minimal down time so you can continue working on your slide show projects during the transition. So let’s get started!

The Game Plan!

shutterstock_143149675_resized

Before we install ProShow on your new computer, there are a couple items we need to check off our list in order to make sure we are fully prepared to install ProShow and move all your shows to the new computer.

Locate your product registration key for ProShow

Make sure you have your product registration key on hand. You will enter this key when installing ProShow on your new computer. You can find your registration key on your order receipt, your products section of your online member account , or you can request your key via email using the lost registration key utility on our website.

Verify your version of ProShow works with the new operating system

What version of ProShow are you running? Go to Help > About ProShow to get the version installed on your current computer. If you are running an older version of ProShow (4.x and earlier) it may not function properly on a newer operating system. ProShow versions 6.x and later will work just fine on your new computer running Windows Vista, 7, or Windows 8.

Switching to a Mac? Learn how to install Windows and ProShow on your Mac to get up and running. For more details regarding this topic, click here.

Check if you are eligible for an upgrade

Are you eligible to upgrade to the latest version of ProShow? When you purchase ProShow, you get a year of free upgrades with your purchase. The same rule applies for upgrade purchases. For more info on upgrade eligibility, click here.

Know where all shows are saved and make sure they load into ProShow

Do you know where your shows are saved? The default save location for ProShow 5.x and later is the ‘Documents’ folder, so this is a good place to start. If your shows are not in this folder, they are probably stored in some other folder on your hard drive. Use the built-in Windows search function (Shortcut: Windows logo key  + F) to find your shows, <type *.PSH> into the search field to find these files on your computer. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time when searching for these files and verify that they still load into ProShow on your current computer before moving forward. We want to make sure all shows load into ProShow to avoid any surprises when it comes time to collect your shows and transfer them to the new computer.

Transfer shows to new computer

How do you plan to transfer your collected shows to your new computer? Do you plan to use a DVD, Blu-ray, flash drive, or an external drive? We recommend using a USB flash drive or external hard drive. Using a flash drive or external hard drive gives you the capacity you need to easily transfer your shows and the content to the new computer in one pass.

Executing the Plan!

Now that we have all items checked off our list, we are ready to collect our shows and transfer the collected shows to the new computer

shutterstock_95004028_resized

Step 1: Collect Show files

When we collect show files we are making a copy of all the content (image, video, audio) in the show from its original location and moving the copy to a specific folder that is easy to move around from one computer to the other. Collecting your show is the easiest way to make sure you have everything you need to successfully load your show on a new computer.

  1. Open your show
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Choose Collect Show Files
  4. Look for Copy to Folder - it’s on the right-hand side
  5. Select Browse
  6. Choose Desktop
  7. Make a new folder – Name it something unique, like the name of your show
  8. Click Ok
  9. Click Collect - it’s on the bottom right-hand side
  10. Wait for ProShow to collect the show; it will let you know when it’s finished.

For a video walk through on collecting show files and transferring content, click here.

If you are running ProShow versions 4.x and earlier, click here.

Step 2: Transfer collected shows to new computer

shutterstock_97680650_resized

Now that we have all shows collected, we are ready to transfer these shows to your USB flash or external hard drive. This is the bridge that we will use to move the content from the old computer to the new computer. The plan is to transfer all collected shows to the USB drive and then move the folders from the USB drive to your new computer’s hard drive for the final resting place.

  1. Open up Windows Explorer (Shortcut: Windows logo key windows logo key+ E) and insert your USB flash or external hard drive. Make sure it appears in Windows Explorer before moving to step 2
  2. Double-click the USB drive to open the contents of this drive and leave this up on the screen
  3. Transfer the folder(s) with the collected show files from your Desktop to your USB drive by dragging and dropping the folders into the Explorer window. Wait for the content to finish copying before moving to step 4
  4. Now that all collect show files are on the USB drive, unplug this drive from your old computer and plug it into the new computer
  5. Open up Windows Explorer on your new computer and double-click the USB drive to open the contents of the drive
  6. Drag and drop the folders you moved from your old computer on the USB drive to the Desktop of your new computer. Wait for the content to finish copying before unplugging the USB drive from your new computer.
  7. With all folders on your Desktop, you can now move them to their final resting place on your new computer. We recommend creating a folder in ‘Documents’ and calling the folder something like My ProShows.

Now all collected show files are on the hard drive of your new computer and we are ready to install ProShow.

Step 3: Install and register ProShow on new computer

pdex installer

There are a couple different ways you can download the installation file for ProShow. You can download the latest version of ProShow 6 from here, or you can go to your products and download the latest version that you are entitled to use with your product registration key.

  1. Choose Save when prompted to download. Most browsers today will automatically save the file to your ‘Downloads’ folder located under your user profile in Windows
  2. Click the Save (or Open) button to begin the downloading process
  3. Wait for download to complete
  4. Start the installation by double clicking on the file you downloaded (the filename will look something like psgold_60_xxxx.exe or pspro_60_xxxx.exe)
  5. When the installer appears on screen, click Next followed by Enter Registration to key in your name, phone and registration key for ProShow
  6. Now follow the on-screen instructions to complete the ProShow installation process.

Now would be a good time to install all add-on packs that you own as well. To download your add-on packs go to your products and download the installation file for each pack. Make sure you gather the necessary product keys for each pack while you are on this screen. After installing your Add-on packs, move on to Step 4.

Step 4: Load your showsOpen show

The last thing we need to do is make sure the shows that we copied over to the new computer load into ProShow.

  1. In ProShow, click Open and browse to the location where your collected shows are saved on your new computer.
  2. Select the folder containing your collected show
  3. Select the <PSH> file from the folder and click Open
  4. Now ProShow will load the show into the timeline
  5. If you receive a Find missing files notice, go through the steps to locate the images in the collected show folder. For more info on missing files, click here
  6. Save the show after it loads into ProShow and then repeat this process for the each additional show that you copied to the new computer.

What to Look for When Upgrading Your Computer’s Hardware

$

When it comes to creating photo and video slideshows on your computer, the last thing you need are technical problems.  Slow frustrating components can really put a damper on the creative process.  If you find yourself at odds with your machine, it might just be time for some new hardware.

Whether you’re looking for a brand new computer or just want to upgrade a few components, here are some things to consider when prioritizing those changes.  You might be surprised just how big an improvement you can see without breaking the bank.systemupgrade_2014a

CPU

The workhorse in any computer is the CPU (central processing unit), which generally controls how quickly things happen on the system.  CPUs from the most recent generation often outperform previous models by a significant margin.  The key here is generation, not expense.  The best performance for your money is often found just below the top of the line model.  A quality Intel i5 CPU, for instance, can be a better buy than a more expensive Intel i7, especially if the latter is from a prior generation.

It’s important to note that newer CPUs may not be compatible with your current system.  Always check with your computer manufacturer, or motherboard documentation, to see if a newer CPU is available for your machine.

Many websites provide CPU benchmarks (performance evaluations) along with price estimates and can be quite helpful in determining which CPU is right for you. Here is one example: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/

RAM

Processing power, as important as it is, doesn’t mean much if your system slows to a crawl when running multiple applications.  While a program is running it resides in RAM (random-access memory), so it can be accessed quickly.  Run too many applications and your RAM fills up.  Run additional applications and the system has to start swapping data back and forth from RAM to the hard drive, drastically slowing things down.

The bare minimum amount of RAM for any serious multimedia work is 4 GBs.  For anything over that you’ll need a 64-bit version of Windows, which is fortunately very common these days.  I recommend at least 8 – 12 GBs of RAM in order to keep things running efficiently, although more is always better.  Unlike swapping out a CPU, which requires a bit of care, RAM upgrades are usually very easy.

Video Card

For certain applications, like ProShow version 6, the video card (GPU) is a key component in providing high resolution playback without sacrificing performance.  A modern dedicated video card, rather than an integrated GPU, is the key to a great playback experience and it may be cheaper than you think.

Modern video cards typically come in a tiered product line where the lowest-end (ex. GeForce 610) is appropriate for basic computer operations and the highest-end (ex. GeForce 680) is designed for intense tasks like video games. A video card from the middle of the pack (ex. GeForce 640, Radeon R7 250) is typically sufficient for multimedia applications like ProShow. Here is a resource to put these tiers, generations, and brands in context. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/

Operating System

The key thing to keep in mind when upgrading your Windows OS is to get the 64-bit version.  A 32-bit OS is going to limit you to 4 GBs of RAM and that’s not a limitation you want.  It is also worth noting that support for Windows XP, including new security updates, has been discontinued.  This makes it a great time to consider making the jump to Windows 7 or Windows 8, both fine operating systems.

Storage

Hard drives provide long term storage for everything from the OS to photos.  They are also a common point of failure and frustration.  Getting the right storage solution for your computer can greatly mitigate these concerns and put you on solid worry-free footing.

Start by determining how much storage you’re likely to need.  For a lot of people, several hundred megabytes (MB) is a great start.  People with more demanding needs (prolific photographers, videographers, etc.) should instead be looking at storage in terms of terabytes (TB).  Assessing your current storage situation should give you a good idea of how much additional space you’re likely to need.

It’s also helpful to look at drive speed, as it can have a big impact on overall system performance.  A traditional (platter) hard drive (HDD) is relatively cheap but also a bit slow by today’s standards.  You’ll see HDDs rated in terms of RPMs where 5400 is slow (common in laptops), 7200 is faster, and 10000 is about as good as they get.  For a system with snappier response time, and lower power consumption, consider getting a solid-state drive (SSD).  Installing your main OS (i.e. Windows) on one of these drives can really help.  Add a larger HDD for general storage and you get the best of both worlds.

Hybrid drives are also a great option, wherein SSD and HDD technology are combined into a single unit.  These drives tend to be faster for a lot of operations, relative to HDDs, but also provide a large amount of storage.

While you’re thinking about added storage, keep in mind that HDDs and SSDs can fail.  Keep your data backed up on another drive (typically an HDD) in order to prevent data loss.  External HDDs are a great option for this particular use.  Investing in a few TBs of external storage can really save the day when something goes wrong inside your computer.  Don’t be caught unprepared!

Laptops

When purchasing a laptop it’s important to make sure you get exactly what you’re looking for with the initial purchase.  Unlike a desktop computer, laptops can be tricky to upgrade and some components may not be user-serviceable at all.

Invest in a good CPU, lots of RAM, and storage that fits your needs (speed vs. capacity).  An SSD can really make a laptop much snappier, relative to the standard 5400 RPM hard drive found in most models, but you won’t get nearly as much space.  This may be an area where the faster drive, coupled with an external storage solution, makes the most sense.  It’s also a great place for hybrid drives.

Getting a good dedicated video card in a laptop often requires a premium investment.  If you’re looking to replace your desktop computer with a laptop, this upgrade may be well worth the cost.  For most people, the laptop does lighter work than their desktop so they can save a few bucks on this component.  One area you don’t want to skimp on is battery life, so be sure to know your options before heading to the checkout.

Using a Mac

If a Mac is in your future then you’ll need to consider how you want to run ProShow Gold or Proshow Producer, which are only available for Windows.  Fortunately, there are some very workable solutions.  Applications like VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop allow you to run a full (virtualized) installation of Windows on your Mac pretty seamlessly. Take a look at how this works in this Knowledge Base article.

Just make sure you have enough RAM, and storage space, to accommodate the extra OS.  It’s good to have 16 GB of RAM, so you can dedicate 8 GBs to Windows when it’s running, and 1+ TBs of storage.  Features like Unity mode (VMWare) and Coherence (Parallels) can even make ProShow looks like it’s running natively on the Mac, for an extra seamless experience.

Photodex does have a Mac-compatible slideshow tool called ProShow Web that creates dynamic photo and video slideshows directly from any Mac or PC. Visit the ProShow Web site to try it free.

Resizing Photos for Use in ProShow

$
0
0

One of the more frequent questions we hear is ‘What size should my images be’ for use in ProShow Gold, ProShow Producer or ProShow Web. The general answer we’ve always given is to use your originals. In this article we will touch on the best tips for resizing your photos using PhotoShop and/or Lightroom to streamline your workflow when importing into ProShow.

ResizeYourPhotosGradient

You may be dealing with gigabytes of image data in a single slideshow that slow down your importing and loading times in ProShow, and may even cause sluggishness while editing. ProShow Web users won’t notice any sluggishness, but the upload times can most certainly be longer than they need to be when using large images.

Ideally you’d want to resize your images to the exact size you need for your slideshow. Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to know how big your images need to be since your images may zoom in and out within your show. So the next best thing is to resize your images by a rule-of-thumb amount so that you can retain full 1080p quality in your shows and account for most zooms. Today I’ll show you how you can do this easily in Photoshop and Lightroom.

Take Stock of Your Image Sizes

Before you go introducing another step in your workflow, make sure your images are good candidates for resizing. For example, if your images are 8MP (~3456×2304) or less, then you’ll probably be fine using your original JPEGs. On the other hand, if your images are 18MP (~5184×3456), you may benefit from resizing.

Preparing Your Photos for Resizing

If you’re going to resize your images, the easiest way to do this is in one batch process. I recommend creating a new folder on your system and copying all the images you plan to use in your slideshow into that folder.

Using Photoshop

  1. Go to File > Scripts > Image Processor
  2. Use the settings below, making sure to click “Select Folder” in the top section and select the folder that contains your images.
  3. Click Run

After a few moments, your images will all be resized and placed in a “JPEG” subfolder, ready to import into ProShow or to upload to ProShow Web.

Using Adobe Lightroom

  1. Select the images in your Lightroom library that you’d like to resize
  2. Go to File > Export
  3. Change “Export To” option to Hard Drive at the top of the window. Set the rest of the settings up as follows:
    Adobe Lightroom
  4. At this point, you can optionally create a preset by clicking the Add button at the bottom left of the window. Give it a name and press OK.
    CropperCapture[738]
  5. Click the “Export” button at the bottom of the window to start the resizing process

Alternatively, you can use the ProShow Lightroom plugin to export straight to ProShow and do the resizing automatically for you. See the tutorial here.

TIPS:

  • In my examples, I used 3456 for the pixel dimensions, which will result in ~8MP images. If you’d like to go even smaller, you can use 2880 instead to yield ~6MP images. This should still be enough to accommodate most zooming and retain full HD quality.
  • If you have Adobe Photoshop Elements, see the this tutorial for step-by-step instructions on batch resizing.
  • Most full-featured image editors have a batch resizing function, so if yours is not covered in this article, do a quick web search for a tutorial and use the image sizes recommended above.

New in ProShow 7, publish your show to HTML5 video and easily embed your videos on your website or blog without any special plug-ins.

HTML5 video is a relatively new standard that has really come into its own over the last few years. New to the HTML spec, you can now add a ‘video’ tag that tells the browser to embed a video on your site or blog.

HTML5 is not a video format, but more an extension to HTML, combined with browser support, to allow you to embed a video on a webpage or blog without a special plug-in to play the video.

Lets take a look at some of the facts regarding HTML5:HTML5_Logo_128

  • Works in all current, modern browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.)
  • Supported on almost all mobile devices (Apple, Android, Windows, etc.)
  • Player controls are entirely up to the browser being used (play/pause/etc.)
  • Video files must be uploaded / hosted on a web server
  • HTML code must be added to website or blog

Now lets look at the facts regarding HTML5 and ProShow:

  • Automatically creates the videos you need for wide browser support (H.264 MP4 / WebM)
  • Generates the HTML5 code so you can easily copy and paste to your website or blog
  • Include specific attributes to the HTML5 code (show controls, auto play, loop, mute, etc.)
  • Choose from a wide range of video resolutions including 360p, 480p, 720p, and 1080p
  • Doesn’t support show menus or multiple shows (current working show only)

Publishing to HTML5 in ProShowPublish_HTML5_options

  1. In ProShow, click on Publish > HTML 5 Video
  2. Select the desired Resolution from the drop down menu near the top.
  3. Choose your video player options (i.e. show controls, auto play, loop, etc.)
  4. Click Create to begin the publishing process.
  5. Select the desired location to save your HTML5 files, click Save.
  6. ProShow will begin rendering and save the files when finished. You should have (3) total files when finished.

Publish_HTML5_files

Embedding the video on your website or blog

  1. Locate the (3) files created by ProShow. You should see an MP4, WebM, and html file.
  2. If adding as a new page on your website – Upload all (3) files to the same directory on your web server.
    • The html file is a complete page that is ready to publish on your website.
    • All three files must be added to the same directory so to the html code can locate the source files.
    • To change the source path, open the html file and make your changes to the <source src=””> line for both videos.
  3. If posting on a blog – Upload both the MP4 and WebM video files to your blog.
  4. Copy the <video> tag HTML that ProShow displays, and paste it into the source code of your blog or article.
    • If using WordPress, make sure you click the ‘Text’ tab and paste the code where you’d like the video to appear on your article.

Publish_HTML5_code

  1. Adjust the source links if necessary to make sure they point to the video files uploaded to your blog.
  2. Test playback and make sure the video plays on your website / blog.

That’s it!
